The Dog Sign in Mythology

There are many legends and stories about the animals chosen to be part of the Chinese astrological system. One of these legends refers to the desire of the Jade Emperor to know the animals that inhabited the Earth. He decided that some of them would be brought before him. To facilitate the selection, the Emperor defined two criteria: they would have to be useful animals to Man or be one of the first to arrive at the Heavenly Palace on the day of choosing the animals.

When the animal signs were to be chosen, the rivalry between cat and dog was fierce. Each tried to prove to the Emperor that it was more useful than the other to Humans. The cat accused the dog of eating too much and limiting itself to guarding the door of the house, while the dog referred to the cat as being useless that only hunted rats and kept the best quality food. In view of the discussion between the two animals, the Jade Emperor was called to issue his judgment.

The Emperor asked the two animals how much food they ate each day. The dog answered honestly, but the cat didn't. Given this, the Emperor decided that both could participate in the competition. When selection day arrived, the dog got up early and arrived at the Palace on time. As for the cat, he let himself sleep, trusting that the treacherous mouse would wake him up in time.

That night, the mouse thought how lustrous the cat's fur was and how ugly he himself looked compared to it. He decided not to wake the cat and let him sleep the next morning. When he finally woke up, the cat well ran towards the Palace, but failed to arrive in time and, as a consequence, had no place as an animal sign.

Dates of the Dog Chinese Zodiac Sign

The Chinese Zodiac is associated with the way time is measured in traditional Chinese culture, that is, in 60-year cycles. This calendar results from the multiplication of the twelve animals and the five elements. This cycle is very important and makes each one of the 60 years a special and unique period.
