With the beginning of self-discovery in House 1, the Second Astrological House gives us the task of giving substance to who we are. The “I” is defined, now we are given the mission to develop a stronger sense of our value and our qualities. We need to form an idea of what we have, what we can call “ours”. We also have to have a sense of what we are worth, of what we would like to become so that we can structure our lives from there.

House 2 in Astrology
House 2 is associated with the Earth sign Taurus and the planet Venus. It is traditionally described as the House of "Values, Possessions, Money and Resources". Although this description refers, almost instantly, to material goods, House 2 is also linked to the development of the “I”.
It is in this House that we realize that we have a distinct body. In addition to ego consciousness (in House 1), we now find that ego has a physical form, a body (ego-body). This sense of unique identity evolves in House 3, where, in addition to the ego and the physical body, we acquire an awareness of our mind (ego-mind).
As we become aware of this individuality, the boundaries of our ego continue to expand. The notion of our uniqueness allows us to continue to develop our own identities. In the Second Astrological House, we realize that we are beings that exist beyond the maternal figure. That when she is not present, we continue to exist, to be.
House 2 and the Sense of Security
But this discovery of our individuality is a frightening phase that marks early childhood. We are vulnerable, limited. After all, the mother (the center of the world of all babies) can disappear. Our safe haven, our source of food and emotional warmth, may not be there at all times.
The awareness of this fact, of the existence of two separate and independent entities (mother-infant axis), is a dramatic moment for all human beings. How to guarantee our safety?
The “I” understands that it needs to self-preserve from external threats. At this moment, we focus on our body, our physical existence, its safety. As time goes by, we realize that we have other skills, such as walking, saying words, doing things on our own. Our identity continues to develop, to gain substance, as we become more independent, more able to shape the world according to our will and interests.
Second Astrological House and Material Goods
House 2 describes what we have or wish to have. But also the features or attributes that, when developed, will give us a sense of substance, value, recognition, and security. For most people, this means money and material possessions.
In a positive sense, having a comfortable level of income allows us to do more. Investing in the development of our capabilities, improving skills, having access to new opportunities, in short, having the necessary financial means to do things that, otherwise, we would not have the opportunity to do. On the negative side, excessive focus on the materialistic side of life can lead to despair, frustration, lack of self-esteem, and low self-perception. The life we idealize for us does not happen.
House 2 symbolizes our need for security. This can come from the financial income but not only that. Like other aspects of personality, the notion of security also varies from person to person. Gemini or Mercury in the 2nd house, for example, value knowledge. Pisces or Neptune in House 2, spirituality or religion. Mars in the Second House, reveals a tendency towards impulsive purchases and the need to build a fortress.
Significance of House 2 on the Astral Map
In the astral map, the signs and planets present in the Second Astrological House are like lanterns pointing to the qualities and talents that we must develop to fulfill our safety plan. Inherently, what we managed to achieve, is reflected in the quality of our self-assessment.
If we achieve our goals, no matter what we need to do to feel safe and whole, the better our assessment of ourselves will be. We will, of course, have a better view when we create the conditions that allow us to live a comfortable, worry-free life.
House 2 also shows our relationship with material goods. Are we compulsive shopping? Do we buy more than necessary because we need the pantry to be always full? Are we disconnected from money and live with little? Do we save? Do we waste it? Are we generous in sharing our goods?
For example, Mars or Aries in House 2 indicates both an eagerness to accumulate money (to build a fortress) and a propensity to spend it impulsively. As for Venus in the Second House, it sees in economic capacity a way to increase its capacity for seduction.
The Zodiac Signs and planets positioned in House 2 encourage us to develop a sense of what we are worth (our sense of identity), help us to understand what we need to feel safe, and, consequently, the level of our ambition material. In Astrology, the interpretation of this House is fundamental as our whole life is based on these criteria.
Throughout life, we may be faced with situations that lead us to change our values and what we want. House 2 shows what we want, what we value, and attract into our life. The transits and progressions for House 2 indicate these times of change.
The lesson we can take from House 2 lies in the need to learn to recognize the potential that resides in each one of us. Only that allows us to go after and achieve our dreams, fulfilling our mission.
The Second Astrological House sheds light on the qualities we can develop to fulfill our life project. After all, we are the ones who build our future. It is in our personal characteristics, that the success factor lies. Carl Gustav Jung stated, "We just discovered the that sustains us when everything we thought sustains us fails to sustain us."
