Each of the 12 Signs of the Zodiac, mirrors the natural “rules” considering several aspects: the Primordial Qualities, the basis of everything, the Elements, the Modes (or Modalities), the Polarities, and the Planets. Each sign has a relationship with its partner on the other side of the Zodiac. In Astrology, the term Polarity expresses this fact.
In Astrology, all energies are necessary for a balanced energy flow. The energy field of action is not watertight and the different types of energy interact and complement each other.

Primordial Qualities of Signs and Polarity
The Primordial Qualities of matter shape the basic personality characteristics of signs. Organized in two axes “Hot and Cold” and “Dry and Wet”, they allowed for a first categorization of the signs.
From this basic definition, we moved to another concept - that of the Elements (or Triplicities): Fire, Earth, Air and Water, where:
- Signs of the Element Fire - formed by the Primitive Qualities "Dry and Hot" - Aries, Leo, Sagittarius.
- Signs of the Element Earth - formed by the Primitive Qualities "Dry and Cold" - Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn.
- Signs of the Element Air - formed by the Primitive Qualities "Moist and Warm" - Gemini, Libra, Aquarius.
- Signs of the Element Water - formed by the Primitive Qualities "Wet and Cold" - Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces.
From this classification, the signs were grouped into:
- Fire and Air Signs - Positive Polarity (also referred to as Masculine, Active or Yang).
- Water and Earth Signs - Negative Polarity (also known as Feminine, Passive or Yin).
The concept of Negative Polarity (Yin in the Chinese Astrology), does not it is a value judgment but rather an indication that the personality of these signs is introverted and receptive. In contrast, the Positive Polarity signs (Yang in Chinese Astrology) are considered extroverted and self-expressive.
Polar or Opposite Signs
The polar or opposite signs affect each other: each Sign has a relationship with its partner on the other side of the Zodiac. In other words:
- Aries - Libra (same Polarity and same Modality = both are Masculine signs and Cardinals)
- Taurus - Scorpio (same Polarity and same Modality = both are Feminine signs and Fixed)
- Gemini - Sagittarius (same Polarity and same Modality = both are Masculine signs and Mutable)
- Cancer - Capricorn (same Polarity and same Modality = both are Feminine and Cardinal signs)
- Leo - Aquarius (same Polarity and same Modality = both are Masculine and Fixed signs)
- Virgo - Pisces (same Polarity and same Modality = both are Feminine and Mutable signs)
Polarity and Astrological Personality
The concept of Polarity is related to the Ascendant/Descendant axis. Both elements are important in analyzing our astrological personality.
While the Ascendant reflects the way we see ourselves, the Descendant mirrors the way others see us. Em together, both elements constitute what we are and what we project outwards. In astrology, polarity, instead of dividing, links, relates and complements two apparently separate and opposite halves, making them a single entity.

While our sign corresponds to our deepest essence, the qualities we recognize and accept in ourselves, the opposite sign represents what we think we do not are. These are the qualities we reject, repress, deny, ignore or refuse to recognize in our personality.
However, interestingly, it is possible to feel attracted to the qualities of our opposite sign when we interact with people of that same sign. We can explain this magnetism by the force of attraction of opposites - "opposites attract".
